When exposed to heat, it releases water molecules which help reduce flame spread and smoke formation. Because of this property, it is considered an environmentally friendly fire-retardant material. Aluminum hydroxide is also used as a raw material in the production of alumina, which is further processed to produce aluminum metal and various ceramic products.
